Theodore sometimes went back to his hometown alone, but other times, he stayed in Riverdale with Eleanor.
He figured that twenty years had passed since the incident, and now that her child was about to be found, it was time for Eleanor to mend things with his parents. So, he decided to bring it up.
Eleanor looked up at him, her voice flat. “Will she actually cook for me? She only waits for me to come home and cook.”
Seeing her talk about his parents so calmly made Theodore feel a bit lighter. He smiled. “Mom didn’t know you couldn’t cook before, but now that she does, she won’t ask you to go into the kitchen anymore. How about we plan a visit to them soon?”
Eleanor’s expression turned cold. “If you want to go back, go by yourself. I’ve told you, I’ll never step foot through that door again. But you’re their son, I can’t stop you from visiting them.” With that, she stood up and headed for the door.
Theodore quickly followed her and tried changing the subject. “Where do you want to eat tonight?”
He knew this wasn’t something that could be rushed. He needed to take things slow and let their relationship heal naturally.
Eleanor replied, “Let’s go home. You cook.”
Theodore frowned slightly. He didn’t really like cooking. Growing up, he’d only ever seen the women in his family in the kitchen, and he’d unconsciously accepted that as the natural order of things.
But after all these years with Eleanor, whenever they were home, he was the one cooking.
He thought he was doing it because he loved her, but now, it felt like she took it for granted. That bothered him a little.
He caught up with her and said softly, “Eleanor, I’m really tired today. How about we just eat out?”
Eleanor gave him a look, her heart softening a bit. She nodded, “Sure, let’s hit that spicy place near our building.”
“Okay,” Theodore said, wrapping his arm around her as they walked together toward the car.
That evening, Alicia received a text from Theodore with the details for the paternity test. It was scheduled at a hospital near her school, at 8:30 AM the next day.
He said everything was arranged–she could just show up. Normally, they’d send a sample, but he preferred she be there in person, so both could be sure of the results.
Alicia replied with a single message: [Got it.]
The next morning, Alicia only had one class, and it didn’t start until ten, so she showed up early at the hospital just after eight.

She sat on a bench waiting until 8:20, when Eleanor showed up–but Theodore was nowhere to be seen.
Eleanor smiled gently. “Your dad had something at school today and couldn’t make it. I’ll stay with you for the
test.”
Alicia nodded, feeling a little relief deep down. “Okay.”
Alicia and Eleanor made sure to watch the entire process, from when the doctor took the samples to when they were brought into the lab.
The doctor said, “You can come back in a week for the results.”
Eleanor, visibly anxious, asked, “Does it really take that long? Is there any way to get it faster?”
The doctor glanced at her and said, “We can expedite the test. It’ll be ready in three days.”
Eleanor immediately said, “Please expedite it.”
The doctor nodded.
After leaving the hospital, Eleanor looked at Alicia. “Want to walk around with me for a bit?”
Alicia checked her phone and said, “I’ve got class in about an hour and a half, so I can stay with you for about an hour.”
“That’s fine,” Eleanor replied.
They walked around the neighborhood, and Alicia pointed out places to eat and drink nearby.
Eleanor nodded. “No wonder they say Premier Academy is a top–tier school. It really is impressive.”
Alicia thought, ‘What does a top school have to do with the local restaurants?‘ But she kept that to herself.
Alicia checked the time again. She had about forty minutes left before class, and she could have stayed for another twenty minutes, but she honestly didn’t feel there was much left to say.
She said, “I should get going. Class is starting soon.”
Eleanor glanced at Premier Academy, then asked, “Mind if I take a tour of your campus?”
Alicia hesitated for a moment, then said, “I can only show you around for a bit.”
“It’s alright, I’ll walk you in, then I’ll just look around myself,” Eleanor said kindly.
Alicia could only agree.
They walked into the campus, and Eleanor looked around at the buildings and dorms. “No wonder they call it an elite school. It really is something.
“Your adoptive parents really put effort into raising you, and they’ve treated you well. Even if we reconnect, you should still be good to them. I’ll always be grateful to them for raising you so well.”

Alicia gave her a strange look and asked, “Do you never pay attention to anything online?”
Eleanor was surprised by the question and shook her head, a bit confused. “Honestly, I’m hardly ever online. When I have downtime, I just browse some paintings or read books–not much TV either.”
Alicia nodded, a hint of irony in her voice. “That explains it.”
“What’s up?” Eleanor asked.
Alicia didn’t want people thinking the Lawrence family had treated her well, so she simply said, “You can check online. I need to get to class.”
She wasn’t going to say anything. Letting Eleanor figure it out online would probably hit harder.
Eleanor nodded. “Alright.”
Alicia thought about the state Eleanor had been in at the gallery that day and hesitated before texting Theodore.
