Theodore blocked her way. “What are you hoping to get? Let’s not even talk about whether Alicia’s our kid or not. Even if she is, confronting the Lawrence family won’t help. They did raise her, after all.”
“Raised Alicia? What did they raise her as?” Eleanor’s lips trembled with anger. “My daughter got sick and couldn’t afford treatment.
“And those two Lawrence boys accused her of stealing money to pay for it, then tried to drag her back to punish her? What kind of life has she had with them?”
Theodore sighed and said, “Eleanor, please calm down. We still need to wait for the paternity test results. If you go off now and it turns out Alicia isn’t our daughter, it’ll be really awkward for us.”
Eleanor took a few deep breaths but still stubbornly said, “I know Alicia is our daughter. Just look at her–she looks like me, and she even inherited my talent for painting.”
Theodore gently pulled her into his arms, saying, “I understand you’re worried about Alicia, but it’s late. Whatever happens, we can’t do anything until morning. Let’s sleep on it, okay?”
Eleanor finally quieted down and slipped under the covers.
Theodore wrapped his arms around her, and Eleanor looked up at him, asking softly, “Theodore, if Alicia really is our daughter, would you stand up for her?”
Theodore’s arm stiffened a bit as he replied, “Honestly, it’s better to hear from Alicia first. Whatever we do, it should be her choice. We can’t just decide things for her.”
Eleanor nodded. “Okay.”
Three days later, Theodore drove Eleanor to Alicia’s school and waited for her class to end. When Alicia got into the car, they all went straight to the hospital.
Once they received the results, Eleanor froze, unable to bring herself to open the envelope. She was afraid it would all be for nothing.
Eventually, Theodore gently took the envelope from her shaking hands and opened it. As expected, the result was clear–Alicia was indeed Eleanor’s daughter.
Eleanor was overwhelmed with joy and hugged Alicia tightly. “Alicia, you really are my daughter.”
Theodore laughed, his smile wide. “We finally found you”
Eleanor nodded and gently tucked a strand of hair behind Alicia’s car. “Alicia, from now on, whatever happens, just tell me. I’m here to protect you–no one will ever bully you again.”
Alicia listened to her words and saw the genuine love in Eleanor’s eyes. It really felt like the way a mother would talk to her child, warm and protective.

She sensed that Eleanor was the kind of person who would be a wonderful mother. Yet, as her gaze shifted to Theodore, a doubt crept in.
He didn’t share Eleanor’s emotional intensity. When mother and daughter reunited, he seemed like a detached observer rather than a loving father. It felt strange to Alicia.
She figured maybe Theodore just wasn’t great at expressing himself, or maybe he wasn’t quite ready to accept her as his daughter yet.
Theodore caught Alicia’s gaze, his eyes lingering on her for a moment before finally saying, “Let’s not hang around the hospital. How about we go grab a bite?”
Eleanor immediately agreed. “Yes, let’s go eat. Alicia, what do you feel like eating?”
Alicia hesitated. “There’s a restaurant nearby that seems pretty nice. Should we check it out?”
Since she still didn’t really know Eleanor and Theodore, Alicia didn’t feel comfortable saying they should eat there.
But Eleanor smiled warmly and said, “If you like it, that’s good enough for me. Let’s just go straight there.”
So, the three of them got in the car and headed to the restaurant. The place wasn’t big, but it was clean and well–kept, one of those old–school spots.
Eleanor chuckled. “You really know how to pick a place, Alicia. Old restaurants like this usually have the best food.”
But Theodore frowned. He didn’t like places like this. Growing up in a poor town, he’d seen plenty of places like this, and most of them weren’t very clean. He couldn’t help but feel a little put off.
However, since both Eleanor and Alicia seemed happy with the choice, he said nothing.
They all sat down, and Eleanor asked, “Alicia, have you been here before?”
Alicia nodded. “Yeah, I’ve hung out here with my classmates a few times.”
“Then you get to choose what we eat, Eleanor said cheerfully, handing the menu over to her.
After asking if they had any food preferences, Alicia ordered three dishes. She handed the menu back to Eleanor, who added another dish, plus some dessert and fruit.
She then passed the menu to Theodore, who didn’t even look at it. “You two go ahead. I’m easy–I’ll eat whatever you pick
Eleanor teased him with a mock–scolding look. “You’re always so lazy. With that, she handed the menu back
to the waiter.
While waiting for the food, Eleanor leaned toward Alicia. “Alicia, have your adoptive parents treated you badly? What happened? You can tell me, sweetie. It’s Mom’s job to protect you now.”
Alicia shook her head. “No need to worry. I’ve already left their house. They raised me, and I don’t hold
