Gloria finished her lunch and turned to Elliot. “I’ve got a class this afternoon, so I’m off. Don’t forget to eat something and clean up when you’re done, okay?”
Elliot just grunted in response. As soon as Gloria left, he was completely absorbed in Alicia’s notebook, oblivious to everything else.
He kept at it until four in the afternoon. By the time Gloria got home, Elliot had skipped lunch entirely.
Gloria couldn’t contain herself any longer and called out to him, “Eat something first, will you?”
But Elliot was engrossed. “Wait, Mom. Let me just finish this section.”
Gloria snatched the notebook from his hands. “Didn’t you say you didn’t care about her notes? Now look at you. You’re completely obsessed.”
Elliot cleared his throat awkwardly. “Well… Mom, are you absolutely sure these are Alicia’s notes? Maybe she got them from some top student or a straight–A genius?”
Gloria rolled her eyes dramatically. “Seriously? What genius? Who else can write exactly like Alicia? I saw her write the last two pages myself.”
Elliot had to concede that Alicia had a real talent for music, especially when it came to ancient instruments and the history of ancient music. Her insights were unlike anyone else’s.
“But so what? Learning music isn’t just about theory. In the end, you’ve got to be able to play. And Alicia can’t even play a single instrument,‘ thought Elliot.
He sat down at the dinner table, and Gloria watched him with a grin. “So, now that you’ve read those notes, isn’t Alicia kind of amazing?”
Elliot nodded. “Yeah, she’s definitely mastered being a theoretical expert. No one talks the talk better than
her.”
Gloria frowned, “Elliot, since when did admitting someone is talented become so difficult for you?”
Elliot stared down at his food. “Her note–taking skills are impressive, and it’s clear she’s a diligent student. But Mom, music isn’t just something she writes about. It’s about performing. If she can’t play, then what does all that theory even matter? She can’t play a single instrument.”
Gloria gave him a stern look. “And what about those who write music or lyrics? Do you think they’re not talented just because they don’t play instruments themselves? Everyone has their own area of expertise. No one can be great at everything.”
Elliot parted his lips, but no words came out. After a few moments of silence, he finally mumbled, “Yeah, she’s pretty talented, Mom. I admit it. But honestly, I just don’t like her. If you want her as your student, that’s your call, but please, stop trying to connect us. I just don’t like her.”
Alicia stood outside the music room, having overheard every word Elliot said. She let out a soft chuckle and
knocked on the door.

Gloria and Elliot both turned to look. Seeing Alicia, Gloria looked a bit awkward. “Alicia, are you here for me? Do you need something?”
Alicia smiled, “I’m just here to grab my notes for tonight’s homework. Elliot, if you still need them, feel free to make a copy.”
Gloria cleared her throat and nudged Elliot with her foot. Elliot simply handed the notebook back to Alicia. “No need. You can take it.”
Alicia nodded, took her notebook, and smiled at Gloria, “Alright, Mrs. Clifford, I’ll head out now.”
Gloria nodded with a smile. As soon as Alicia turned to leave, Gloria nudged Elliot again and hissed through clenched teeth, “Go walk her out, and don’t forget to apologize. She heard everything you said.”
Elliot wasn’t thrilled about it, but he went anyway.
He trailed after her, and Alicia glanced back with a smile. “You really don’t have to walk me out.”
But Elliot stepped right in front of her, frowning, “Alicia, just drop the act, okay? I know my mom likes you, but I don’t. I’m not going to fall for you, so you might as well…”
Alicia cut him off mid–sentence. “I don’t like you either.”
She had zero interest in letting him finish his tirade. She wouldn’t stick around just to get insulted either. That wasn’t her style, and she definitely didn’t have time to waste on that.
Elliot was genuinely taken aback. He never expected Alicia to be so blunt.
He felt a surge of anger, but it quickly faded into a bitter laugh. ‘She’s just trying to get a reaction out of me,’ he thought.
He let out a mocking snort. “Alicia, do you know what really gets under my skin about you? You pretend you’re not interested, but you’re always finding ways to get close, always angling for my attention, yet you never admit it.
“Honestly, you’re not even half as bold as Tiffany, or any of those other girls who try to hang around me. You have no guts or sincerity. All you’ve got is that manipulative vibe. That’s exactly the kind of girl I can’t stand.”
Alicia laughed and retorted, “You know what I hate most about you? You’re so self–centered. You honestly believe you’re such a great catch that every girl who sees you should fall head over heels? Please.
“There’s a whole world of people out there who are way better than you. If you don’t look around, just look at Mrs. Clifford. Even your own mom doesn’t want you to inherit her work. She’s out there searching for a successor. Just how bad can you be? Even your own mom despises you.”
Alicia’s words were like a bomb, almost making Elliot explode. He was about to explain why Gloria wouldn’t pass down her research, but Alicia cut him off. “Do everyone a favor and stop acting like you’re the center of the universe. It’s really embarrassing.”
With that, she turned and walked off. In this life, Alicia had made up her mind. Anyone who messed with her was asking for a fight. She wasn’t about to let anyone walk all over her anymore.

Elliot was so furious that he was shaking all over, but he just stood there, rooted to the spot, unable to move or even utter a single word.
Alicia really is sharp–tongue,‘ Elliot thought. ‘No wonder Tiffany always gets bullied by her. Hmph, now that everything’s out in the open, I don’t have to worry about her coming after me anymore!
As he walked back, Elliot’s anger kept building up. He thought, ‘Did she really say my mom won’t pass down her legacy because I’m not good enough? How dare she!
