Henry couldn’t find Alicia anywhere. By the time night fell, the campus had thinned out, with only a handful of regulars left. Some were heading out for dinner, while others were just wandering aimlessly. Also, a few went off shopping downtown.

He knew Alicia wasn’t staying at the school dorms anymore. She’d moved to Linen Bay Residences. So he jumped into his car and headed there without hesitation.

When Henry pulled up outside Linen Bay Residences, he realized he didn’t have a clue which building or apartment Alicia lived in.

He decided to see if the security guard could help him out, so he headed over and explained his situation.

However, Henry didn’t live there and the security guard had never seen him before. Seeing a stranger suddenly asking questions about the residents, the guard immediately got wary. No matter what Henry tried, he still couldn’t get a single piece of useful info about which building Alicia lived in.

Henry was left feeling utterly crushed. With nothing else he could do, he dragged himself back home.

Patricia was lounging on the sofa, watching TV and sipping on her soup. When she saw Henry walk in, she immediately put her bowl aside and hurried over. Henry, you barely recovered. Where did you go this time? You can’t go drinking again. Do you understand? Last time you ended up with a fever just from drinking too much and catching a chill

She kept chattering on, which started to get on Henry’s nerves. He frowned and made his way upstairs, but Patricia grabbed his arm. Don’t go up yet. I had the kitchen prepare some soup. Come have some too.”

That stuff is for women. Count me out,” Henry muttered, clearly uninterested, as he continued going upstairs.

Patricia’s voice sharpened, rising a bit. Stop right there.”

Henry rarely saw Patricia get mad. She usually let him do whatever he wanted.

He was taken aback when she yelled and quickly turned around. Patricia stood there, her face stern. Henry, how old are you?

Twentytwo,” Henry replied.

When he answered so earnestly, Patricia got even more annoyed. Did he seriously just give me his age like I don’t know? I’m his mom. I was just trying to tell him he’s not a kid anymore and needs to get his act together, but he completely missed the point, she thought.

Patricia snapped, Yeah, you remember you’re twentytwo, but look at you. You’re just lazing around all day, never doing anything useful. Isn’t it about time you stepped up and took some responsibility for the family business? Or are you just planning to sit back and watch Charles run everything forever?

Henry frowned, Uncle Charles is doing a great job with the company, and we get dividends every year. Why work hard when we can just relax and get paid?

Patricia slapped him on the arm. You useless brat! Do you even know how much the company brings in every year? And the tiny cut we end up with? You’re really okay just settling for scraps? Look at Charles. He’s in charge, has all the power at home, and even your grandpa doesn’t dare cross him.

Henry was super annoyed by Patricia going on and on. He rolled his eyes and said, Mom, Uncle Charles isn’t calling the shots at home just because he runs the company. It’s because he’s actually awesome. Everything the company has now, he built it up himself. It was nowhere near this good when Grandpa handed it over.”

Patricia got even more ticked off. You really are clueless. Your grandpa paved the way for him. That’s why things kept getting better after he took charge.

If it had gone downhill, do you think your grandpa would’ve trusted him with the business? Honestly, with the foundation your grandpa laid, even someone like you could’ve kept the company going strong.

No matter how much people talked up Charles, Patricia refused to believe it. An exsoldier running a business? Give me a break. It was George who did all the heavy lifting. Charles just got lucky, she thought.

Oh,Henry muttered, tuning her out. He’d been hearing this same nagging since he was a kid, but truthfully, the last thing he wanted was to get into some family power struggle with Charles.

Patricia retorted sharply, Oh? What kind of answer is that?

Henry replied, Why are you always pushing me to fight over this stuff? Grandpa is still here, so is Dad, and Uncle Charles is in charge. There’s no way it even comes down to me. Why don’t you hassle Dad about it instead?

Patricia nearly exploded with anger. She clutched her chest, gasping, YYou useless brat!

Cameron was even worse. Not only did he never go after anything himself, but he was always sticking up for Charles. Despite having different mothers, he treated Charles like his own brother.

Seeing Patricia struggling to breathe, Henry rushed to her side and patted her back. Mom, I’ll get into the company eventually. Justnot yet. Come on. Let me relax for a couple more years.”

Patricia took a deep breath. Alright, you get one more year, just one. But don’t think you can just mess around all the time. You need to find yourself a real girlfriend. I’ve already lined up a few for you, so get ready to meet them soon.

Henry shot back, I have a real girlfriend.

Who?Patricia asked, and then suddenly remembered. Wait, you mean Alicia? Didn’t you two break up?

Henry jerked his head up, eyes snapping to Patricia. Mom, how do you even know we broke up? Was it because of you? Did you give her attitude that day when she dropped me off? Did you push her into dumping

me?

Mom, why do you always have to interfere in my life? We’re in the middle of a rough patch, and we’re finally getting close to sorting things out. She brought me home with so much effort, and then you just had to get involved again. Now she’s even more pissed at me.”

No matter how much Alicia insisted she hadn’t shown up that day and hadn’t taken him home, Henry was convinced it was all a ruse. He was absolutely certain it had been Alicia.

Maybe she’s just trying to mess with my head and get more attention from me, Henry thought to himself.

Patricia scoffed at the idea. What are you even talking about? When have I ever forced her to do anything? Did she actually tell you that?
