Alicia hesitated, then said, “Uh… Doctor Johnson, could you lend me some money? I promise I’ll pay you back in ten days, with interest.”
Harvey was silent for a moment.
‘Can I really lend her the money?‘ he wondered. ‘Honestly, 100 thousand dollars isn’t a big deal for me, but if I do, Charles will probably tear me a new one.‘
So, he cleared his throat and said, “Well, I’m just a doctor, not exactly rolling in cash. Charles runs a company -he’s the one with the deep pockets.”
“I see. Thanks,” Alicia chuckled. “Just go ahead and schedule the surgery on time. I’ll come by and settle the bill tomorrow.”
Alicia hadn’t seriously planned on borrowing money from Harvey anyway—it was just something she said on a whim. So when he didn’t offer, she wasn’t the least bit disappointed.
After hanging up, Alicia logged into her online art shop and sent a message to the buyer: [Hello, I’m in urgent need of cash. Would you mind marking the order as received? I can send you a photo of the shipping label for proof.]
There was no reply from the buyer.
Alicia could get it. That guy couldn’t have been sitting on the website all day—just like her, he only logged in when necessary.
For a moment, Alicia was completely at a loss as to where she could scrape up the money she needed.
Meanwhile, after hanging up, Harvey thought for a moment and then decided to call Charles.
“Charles, hurry! Your chance just came knocking!” Harvey blurted out as soon as the call connected.
Charles’s voice was cool as he asked, “What chance?”
Harvey replied, “Your dear friend is short on cash. Go on, lend her some money–or even better, just give it to her. That’ll earn you some major gratitude, trust me.”
Charles’s voice grew even colder. “How did you know she was short on cash?”
Harvey blurted out, “She asked me for a loan! See? I told you–I’m way more popular than you.”
He was just trying to show off in front of Charles, so he didn’t mention Sasha’s surgery or that he was the one who called Alicia first.
Charles gave a cold snort. “Harvey, do you have a death wish? How many times have I told you to leave her alone?”
Harvey blinked, realizing Charles was actually pissed. He scrambled, “No man, I swear I didn’t do anything–I

never messed with her! Just let me explain…”
With a beep, the dial tone buzzed in his car.

Harvey stared dumbly at his phone. ‘Well, crap. Charles is seriously mad this time. He gave his own mouth a couple of light slaps. ‘Serves me right for mouthing off. I really need to learn to shut up.
He hurried to explain in the group chat: [@Charles, Charles, don’t be mad! I was just messing around, honestly–it’s not what you think at all!]
The moment he sent that, the whole chat lit up.
Xavier: [Whoa, Harvey, what did you do this time to get Charles pissed at you?]
Jeffrey: [Yeah, what happened? Spill it!]
Harvey ignored both of them, still desperately tagging Charles: [@Charles, Charles! Please, just hear me out!]
Xavier: [Seriously, what’s stopping you? Spill the beans already!]
Jeffrey: [Harvey, you’re impossible. Are you auditioning for the sad heroine in a vintage drama? You keep begging for Charles to hear you out, but you never actually say anything. Did someone put a sock in your mouth?]
Harvey: [Oh, shut up, both of you. Charles isn’t even responding yet–how am I supposed to say anything till he talks to me first?]
Jeffrey: [If you zip it much longer, he might never reply ever again.]
Harvey mulled it over and realized Jeffrey had a point. So he jumped on the group chat and said: [@Charles, look, here’s the deal. Alicia’s friend’s sister is really sick–it’s kidney failure.
He then wrote: [Our hospital just happened to score a donor kidney, and don’t ask me how Alicia even found out, but she came straight to me to sort it out. You know me, always Mr. Dependable–I got things moving. Now the surgery’s set up, but they’re short on cash, and Alicia’s kind of freaking out about it.
Harvey sent one more message: [Trust me, getting a donor kidney is always like racing against the clock; if they miss their slot, someone else could snatch that kidney in a heartbeat. So I called Alicia, and she just threw it out there, asking me for a loan like it was no big deal.]
After sending that message, Harvey’s eyes lit up. ‘Hold on… why not stir things up and shift the drama onto someone else?‘
So he fired off another message: [Charles, listen up–Alicia’s friend is a guy, tall, good–looking, the type girls can’t get enough of. Total sunshine boy. And guess what? Alicia said she’s personally covering his sister’s surgery bill. Seriously, she’s putting her heart into helping him.]
As soon as he sent that, Charles finally messaged back: [If her friend can’t pay for the surgery, then why did you call Alicia?]
Charles didn’t even bother to sugarcoat it–his question hit the nail right on the head.

Harvey had no idea how to respond.
Navier and Jeffrey could only mentally mourn for Harvey at that point.

Harvey stared blankly at Charles’s question in the chat, his hand unconsciously tightening around his phone. Wait… why did I call Alicia in the first place?‘ he wondered, feeling a bit lost.
He sat there for ages before finally typing: She asked me to help her find a donor kidney, and to handle everything. I’m only doing all this for her…]
But halfway through, he erased it and rewrote: [She asked me to find a donor kidney, but honestly, I’m really just doing this for you. I was worried that if the surgery didn’t happen and I didn’t let her know, she’d end up pissed at you.]
After he sent that message, his heart hammered wildly, and his grip on the phone got even tighter.
Charles: [I’ll thank you on her behalf. Next time, just come straight to me. So, what’s that guy’s name?]
When Harvey saw that, he practically breathed out in relief and shot back a reply: [Hank Grant.]
After sending the message, he tossed his phone onto the coffee table, flopped back onto the couch, and just stared blankly at the ceiling.
Once Charles had answered everyone in the group chat, he sat back in his office and stared at Alicia’s number in his contacts for a while.
After a moment’s hesitation, he finally dialed her up.
Alicia answered from the subway, the sound of the crowd behind her. “Hi, Mr. Yates!”
Charles softened his voice a little. “Class finished already? Should I come pick you up?”
Alicia chuckled. “I’m done for the day–already riding the subway home.”
After a brief pause, she asked, “Did you need something, Mr. Yates?”
Charles answered, “Yeah, just something.”
