Chapter 172
Back at the house, her act continued. The next morning, she strolled into our room balancing a steaming cup of coffee and set it in front of Liam like she was auditioning for Sister of the Year.
“You don’t need to lift a finger,” she announced. “Just shower, get dressed, and drink this.”
Liam’s eyes shifted from Sophia to me. “Emily, I know you know what this is about. So tell me.”
I lifted my hands. “Ask your sister.”
He turned back to Sophia. “Alright, enough. What do you want? And don’t even try asking for that car. You turned it down when I offered to trade it for the baby’s gender.”
Sophia faltered, her mouth opening, then snapping shut. After a long pause, she muttered, “Nothing. I’m just being a good sister,” before fleeing the room.
The second the door closed, Liam narrowed his eyes at me. “You’re enjoying this too much.”
I grinned shamelessly. “Absolutely.”
“You really expect me to believe you don’t know what she’s
up
to?”
“Trust me,” I said, still smiling. “No idea.”
He shook his head. “When you two are done playing, one of you better clean up.” Then he disappeared into the bathroom.
I laughed all the way to Sophia’s room, where I found her curled on her bed, groaning.
“Talk to him already!” she wailed.
“Fine. Tonight,” I promised, still grinning. “But this has been way too entertaining to stop early.”
“At least someone’s having fun,” she muttered into a pillow.
That night, after dinner and a long shower, Liam and I snuggled together in bed. I turned to face him, tracing his features in the soft light.
“You know I love you, right?” I said.

“I’m so lucky I met you In another life, I’d want to meet you earlier. High school, maybe. Just to steal more years with you.”
Liam chuckled, shaking his head. “So Sophia finally sent the right person for the job. Should’ve known”
He studied me closely. “Alright, out with it. What does she want this time? Or what did she do?”
“It’s nothing bad. She’s… seeing someone.”
“Okay,” he said slowly. “She’s free to date. As long as the guy’s responsible. That shouldn’t make her act like this unless…” His voice trailed off, and his eyes hardened. “Unless it’s someone I know.”
I hesitated. He read it in my face.
“What’s the chance I’ll like him?”
I winced. “Twenty percent.”
His jaw tightened. “Then she’s right to be scared.”
“Stop it. She’s grown. She can make her own choices.”
“She’s my sister. I won’t let her make a mistake.”
“Trust me,” I whispered, touching his cheek. “He’s a good guy.”
Liam’s gaze stayed locked on mine. “Then why are you both so sure I won’t like him?”
I didn’t answer. Instead, I whispered, “Will you at least meet him? Please, for me.”
After a long silence, he sighed. “Fine. She can invite him to dinner tomorrow.”
Relief poured through me. I kissed him gratefully.
He smirked. “That’s not nearly enough of a thank you.” His hands slid lower, making me squeal with laughter.
The next day, Sophia confirmed Mason was free. I suggested she invite Jay too. “Might as well tell both brothers in one night.”

Sophia looked like she might faint. “Emily, you’re trying to kill me.
“You’ll thank me later,” I assured her, already texting Liam to come home on time.
