“Why are you laughing”” he asked, exasperated.
“Because you,” I said, pressing my forehead to his, “all tough and unshakable on the outside, are really just a soflic inside.
His lips twitched, but his eyes remained serious.
I kissed him gently. “It’s alright, Liam. We’ll be careful until we’re ready for another baby. But you can’t keep hiding from me. If you do, how are we ever going to get to the number of kids you said you wanted?”
That earned me a smile. Then he shook his head, amused. “Who would’ve thought I’d be the one refusing, after you screamed at me in the hospital that I should never touch you again?”
He dropped his voice into a falsetto, mimicking: “Liam, don’t you dare come near me again!”
I shoved him playfully, laughing so hard my stomach ached.
When the laughter faded, he touched my face with a tenderness that made my body melt. Slowly, carefully, he pulled off the straps of my nightie from my shoulders, his eyes sweeping over me as though seeing me anew.
“You must have lost your mind to think I’d ever stop being attracted to you,” he whispered.
And then his mouth found mine, and the fear gave way to heat.
Liam had begun a new ritual. Time set aside just for us. No matter how hectic the week grew, how many hours he stole away to stare at Sophia’s sleeping face, he always made sure I knew our relationship came first too.
“Parenthood doesn’t erase us, Em,” he told me one evening, brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear. “I never want you to feel I’ve given all of myself away.”
So whenever it was our time, my mom, Laura, or Big Sophia would take over baby duty, practically fighting for turns. Liam, meanwhile, kept his weekends sacred. No calls. No meetings. No interruptions.
On one of our nights reserved just for us, I dragged him into the theater room and queued up a

cheesy rom-com, waiting for the inevitable groan. Liam loved to mock them, and I loved watching him try not to laugh at the clichés.
Halfway through, his phone vibrated. He muttered something, excused himself, and went out.
At first, I waited. But when ten minutes became fifteen, I left the dim theater and walked into the living room.
Big Sophia sat cross-legged on the floor, Sophia gurgling in her arms.
“Where’s Liam?” I asked.
“He’s in the study with Kelvin.”
My eyes widened.
“Exactly my reaction,” she said, bouncing the baby lightly. “If I weren’t stuck here babysitting, I’d already be at that door myself. Go on, you know you want to.”
I grinned. “You’ll want updates, won’t you?”
“Obviously.”

I moved quietly down the hallway, careful with every step, until I reached the study door. Their voices hummed faintly from inside, blurred by the wood. I nudged the handle, pushing the door just enough to leave the slightest crack, then leaned in close, angling my ear toward the gap, hoping they were too deep in conversation to notice.
“…you crossed lines,” Liam’s voice came, low and edged. “If you weren’t family, Kelvin, jail would’ve been an option. You hurt Emily. You hurt all of us.”
“I know.” Kelvin’s tone was raw. “I was wrong. I’m sorry. Truly.”
Silence stretched. Then Liam again. “I can forgive. But don’t make me regret it.”
“You won’t,” Kelvin promised. “I’m tired of the fighting. The bitterness. I want us to try again.”
Another pause, heavier this time. Then the scrape of chairs, footsteps, and-
“We’ll try,” Liam said at last. And then, in a moment I never thought I’d see, they embraced.
I mouthed a silent wow, my chest tightening at the sight of two brothers who had once been divided now closing the distance between them.
“Em,” Liam called suddenly, without even looking. “You can come in now instead of
