Amelia stepped out of the restaurant and headed for the parking lot, scanning the area for anyone familiar. No luck. She pulled out her phone, shared her location with Selfhelper, and almost immediately got a ping back.
She watched the little dot representing Selfhelper move closer on the map, their icons nearly colliding at the corner of the lot. Excitement bubbled up, and she sped up, turning the corner with a hint of anticipation—only to find it completely empty.
She glanced down at her phone. The other person had just exited location sharing.
Seriously? Where did they go? Frustration flared, making her feel like she’d just walked into a prank. Gritting her teeth, she called Selfhelper.
The ringtone sounded—right behind her.
Amelia froze. Turning, she saw a tall, lean man strolling toward her, framed by the blaze of sunset. The sky behind him looked like it was on fire, streaked with gold and crimson.
She just stood there, stunned.
Ryan?
He picked up his endlessly ringing phone, and right then the call in her ear cut off, replaced by his deep, unhurried voice. “Amelia, you might want to wipe your mouth. You’re drooling.”
Amelia snapped back to herself and wiped at her mouth on reflex. Dry. Of course.
“Ryan!” she shot back, glaring at him.
The shattered gold of the sunset flickered in her eyes, making them shine.
Ryan looked at her without saying anything, hiding whatever he was feeling just behind his eyes.
“How is it you? You’re Selfhelper?” She could barely believe it.
He raised an eyebrow. “Why not me?”
Amelia sucked in a breath, replaying every message she’d sent Selfhelper—complaints, secrets, all the things she thought she was telling Diana’s backup account. She’d even called him “babe” once. Humiliation and anger welled up.
“So you went to all this trouble—made a secret account—just to laugh at me?” Her voice was sharp now, threaded with disappointment. “Ryan, I thought you’d changed since college. But you’re still the same…”
Still childish. Still annoying. Still completely impossible.
She turned away, face closed off and ready to leave.
