She was excited and impatiently waiting for her exam results to come out. She was currently prowling around in the packhouse library, practically counting the very seconds to the release time. She knew it was still like 10 minutes away, but she could barely stand still with her nervousness over whether she had got that 4.0 she was praying for.
When she found herself face to face with Jace, “There is a mating ball here tomorrow, and you’re not dressed for the arrival of our guests, why not?” he’d asked her.
She’d stared up at him and wondered what the hell was wrong with him? She’d never been expected to stand on the packhouse steps with him. That was a job for his Luna, who was still Gloria. She’d not been punished or removed from office, she had just moved out of the room she lived in to another room, just one floor below them was all.
It hadn’t gone down so well with Gloria. She’d actually ranted about it, and then stalked over to Nora when seeing her heading for the dining hall, looking more than ticked off with her. “I want a word with you.” she’d grated out at her and, for the first time ever, she’d seen the pack’s Gamma following the Luna, and he’d snarl at Gloria “Get the hell away from the Alpha’s Mate, and show some respect.”
Nora had raised an eyebrow at Matt, and Gloria had actually come to a complete halt, a more than shocked expression on her face at the reprimand from the pack’s Gamma, a man that had been attached to her for 60 odd years. Clearly, she’d not been expecting it, and hadn’t looked to like it either. Jace had never chastised Gloria about anything she did where Nora was concerned, yet now the Gamma was.
Nora had not cared to stand there and hear them argue it out, but she had heard Gloria stating “It’s all Nora’s fault, Matt, that I was moved from my suite. I’m the Luna to this pack, and now I’m made to not reside in the Luna’s Suite. Even after, I agreed to have the plaque changed. To my name, instead of my rank inside this pack. She made me be moved to another floor altogether.”
Nora had rolled her eyes at hearing those words, She’d not made her, had simply pointed out a fact to the Alpha that ran this place, and he’d moved that woman himself, because he probably thought that it would see Nora swoon and crawl into his bed. Not something she was going to do regardless of his sudden influx of
attempts to be around her this week,
Which he had done. He appeared to be keeping track of her with the pack tether, because if she ate in the dining hall, he was there next to her within a few minutes, to eat with her. He had gotten her coffee twice and
smiled at her, tried to hold her hand at one point to which she’d simply reached out and picked up her drink with it. Effectively and effortlessly disallowing him to touch her, he’d sighed and retracted his hand.
Now she was staring at him, wondering why he was asking her to greet the arriving Alphas, considering that not once, in all the months that she had been here, had he ever asked her to do that. It had been Gloria
standing out there with him. And that she wolf had also walked around on his arm the entire time those
Alphas had been here. Talking to all their allied Alphas, as she had probably done for the past 60 years, and
Jace hadn’t seen an issue with it. Even though he’d had a Mate and she was here inside the pack.
“Isn’t Gloria going to do that? She did it the last time with you,” she commented, and he frowned at her.
“It’s your job, Nora. You, my Mate, are supposed to stand next to me on these occasions. I get you were just a simple low–ranking warrior’s daughter, not raised in the packhouse. But surely you saw pack protocol once in
ch27
a while, around the arrival of Alphas to your home pack, yea?” Jace asked her
“Yes.” She nodded. “The Alpha and his Luna groet arriving quents,” She answered simply, “I just figured Gloris being your Lunn, would be doing it like she always han done, even with rnn here, as your Mate you always had Gloria greet your guests with you.” She shrugged at him, “I’ve also got things on today myself. I’m certain that Gloria will be happy to stand next to you as she always doen. It’s also what you’re used to doing, and your allies are used to seeing.” She told him.
As far as she could tell, none of his allies even thought it was odd that she was not next to him. His allies. had been around for a long time, and they all know Glorin was his Luna. That wasn’t about to change anytime soon, and he could make her officially that. Nora thought absently to herself, in just a few weeks
now.
“You will go upstairs and put something nice on, and then come downstairs and stand next to me, as is your Position within this pack.” He’d stated, “Do your job here inside this pack, and not just think your studies aro
I that matter.” He’d snapped. “You will start doing your job, I’ve given you plenty of time this week to see that I want that. You to stand next to me, be at my side, so today I expect it from you. It’s not that hard to suck up one weekend. No leeway will be granted on this matter with our allied here. You will not embarrass me or the pack by not attending this,” he stated, and then he’d stalked away from her.
She’d stared after him as he’d left the library in what she thought were long angry strides. She shook her head, why would it embarrass him? He’d not been embarrassed by not having her on his arm before, but she walked upstairs. She’d do it, show him she knew what it was she was supposed to do. It was just one time and after this, all his allied would know it was a blatant crock of s**t. Because she would gone the next time that they came here.
She caught an angry glare from Gloria, who was stalking across the foyer wearing a lovely chiffon dress, dressed to do the meet and greet, Nora thought absently. But she wasn’t going to come at her. Every time she’d tried over the last few days, the pack’s Gamma had showed up and rounded on her for speaking in a manner inappropriately to the Alpha’s Mate.
She didn’t know why he was suddenly doing that, she could only put it down to Jace not wanting her to reject him. Which she didn’t understand, though she’d also had no pains of betrayal this week either. That was now three consecutive weeks where he’d not touched Gloria at all. It was odd, but she had a feeling he was trying to contain her, and get her to forgive him and come back to him.
She didn’t think he’d seen the actual error of his ways, because Gloria was still seated in the Luna’s office,
and was still addressed as such by the pack. She didn’t understand why he suddenly expected her to stand next to him, and his sudden seeming change of behavior around her and Gloria.
Nora stood and looked at her clothes and wondered what she owned that would be appropriate attire for a
meet and greet? She had nothing like what Gloria wore; even on an average day inside this pack, let alone like
the dress Gloria was currently walking about in.
Nora pulled on her nicest pair of black slacks and a simple white–capped sleeve blouse, with a little black
ribbon tied at the collar that allowed for the ribbon ends to flow down to the middle of the blouse.
It was what she wore to interviews: nice and presentable, she thought. Though she wondered what he was expecting her to wear for the mating ball, he had to know she had nothing to wear. He had yanked her clothes and outfits out of her suitcase and put them back in his walk–in often enough to know she didn’t own a single evening dress.
She’d not even been wearing one the night they’d met, she had not been at the mating
that night, it was for ranked members only, and she was not that. He’d had to hunt her out in her although she had scented him out as well and gone outside to follow that delicious scent that was her Mar Both she and Rosa had been excited and happy to have a Mate. Not so much anymore.
She looked at the time on her phone and saw it was getting close to her exam results being released, so she would take her phone with her, so she could check it right away. There was still five minutes to go. She’d have time to check it. It was a 10–minute drive from the gate to the packhouse at a casual drive.
