The two of them didn’t bother staying at the police station for more information. They headed straight to the airport – there was no way they could let Wendy leave Westbrook today.
Meanwhile, Wendy, wearing sunglasses and trailed by a bodyguard, was already boarding a private jet.
Looking out at Westbrook, the city she had lived in since childhood, her expression was unreadable. There was no affection, no reluctance, no sentiment at all.
“Ma’am,” the bodyguard prompted.
“Let’s go.”
Without another glance back, Wendy walked up the steps under her bodyguard’s escort. The plane ticket had been nothing but a smokescreen. Surely Henry and Nolan didn’t think she’d sit around waiting to be caught.
Back on the road, Nolan’s people reported the situation at the airport.
Midway there, Nolan suddenly stopped the car.
“What’s wrong?” Eliza asked, puzzled.
“Something’s off.”
“What do you mean?”
“Wendy’s already gone.”
The words left Eliza with a sinking feeling.
“You mean the ticket was just a diversion?”
“Wendy knows Henry has eyes on her. Trying to fly out on a commercial ticket would be the dumbest move she could make. But with the police now knowing the bones under the lab tested positive for a virus, she’d want to avoid the fallout and run. If she’s not going by sea, then the only option left is a private jet.”
If that was true, things had just become much harder.
Eliza frowned. “If she’s already on a private jet, then she’s probably airborne by now. Doesn’t
that mean we’ve lost her?”
“Saint Corp is her base of operations. If she’s headed abroad, maybe we can take down the entire nest in one move.”

Eliza blinked, considering it. “That… actually makes sense.
Still, she couldn’t shake the feeling that it wasn’t that simple.
“Have you thought about who put the bones back under the lab in the first place?”
They hadn’t looked too deeply into it before – but now it mattered.

If Wendy was running overseas, someone needed to take the fall. That scapegoat would have to be the school’s principal. But surely it wasn’t because the principal had grown a conscience.
Wendy’s subordinates would never betray her. That meant whoever did it had to be someone more powerful than Wendy.
The Foster family was loyal to its own, so they could be ruled out.
In Westbrook, only she and Nolan knew all the details – so if it wasn’t either of them, the one pulling strings had to be outside Westbrook.
Which meant Wendy had been turned into someone’s disposable pawn. Her urgency to flee abroad was likely to demand answers – and to seek Saint Corp’s protection.
With Saint Corp’s influence overseas, even if she caused trouble, no one would dare touch her.
“Looks like we’ll have to make a trip overseas,” Eliza concluded.
Nolan hadn’t expected the situation to escalate like this, but there was no choice. They’d have to investigate in person, leaving Westbrook in the hands of Lewis and Colton.
When Eliza went to tell Halbert, he frowned. “I don’t agree.”
“Why not? We’re going to investigate Saint Corp, not anything else.”
Halbert’s refusal surprised her.
“Tristan told you to stay in Westbrook because your school’s at Claire University, and you want to finish your studies. That’s the only reason the family didn’t object. But now you’re talking about running overseas to dig into Saint Corp? Tell me what does Wendy have to do with you? What difference does it make to your life if she’s done bad things? Do you really want to throw yourself into that whirlpool?”
Halbert wasn’t worried about trouble at the medical school it was an internal Foster family matter, purely Westbrook’s business. If the sky fell, someone taller would hold it up. Eliza didn’t need to get involved.
“Besides,” he added, tapping her forehead, “the Foster family hasn’t even acted yet, and you’re already chasing after her. Stop doing these thankless things. Just finish your studies here in Westbrook.”

“I’m not doing something thankless. My mother was investigating this case back then too. For all I know, her death could be connected to Wendy. Otherwise, why would the Foster family have kept looking for that ring ever since my mother bled to death?”
