Eliza had thought Nathaniel was deliberately covering for Naomi and Wendy. But the careless ease in his tone, the way he brushed it all aside, told her he truly believed their story.

“I see. Through Mrs. Foster, then? But I heard something happened to her,” Eliza said lightly.

Nathaniel gave a short laugh. “She’s not so easy to take down. Anyone in our business knows how to keep themselves alive.”

He dangled the words like bait, testing her reaction. Eliza tilted her head, playing along. “Oh? Then what really happened?”

“If Ms. Rivers wants the details, why not ask Mr. Hayes? Who in Westbrook would dare touch Mrs. Foster? Wendy’s reach abroad is not to be underestimated. Now that she’s overseas, no one here can touch her.”

He wasn’t wrong, but it wasn’t what Eliza was after.

“Her troubles have nothing to do with me,” she said smoothly. “What I am interested in is that clinic. I might want to try it myself.”

“That’s easily arranged.”

Nathaniel opened a drawer, slid a business card across the table, and smiled. “This company.”

“You seem to know quite a lot, Mr. Nathaniel.”

“Of course. The Hartwell family holds shares in it. If you’d like to visit, I’ll have them treat you free of charge.”

Nathaniel had no intention of making trouble for Eliza. As the Sue family’s daughter, she carried Tristan’s shadow wherever she went. Keeping her in good humor was the same as currying Tristan’s favor. Once, he had even considered pushing Matteo toward her–if not for her engagement to Nolan.

Eliza lowered her eyes, studying the card. The clinic was here, in Westbrook. That was all she needed. She rose gracefully to her feet. “I only came to see my sister tonight, and to ask about our mother. Since there’s nothing more, we’ll be going. Sorry for the intrusion.”

Her hand slipped into Nolan’s as they turned for the door.

Nathaniel chuckled and signaled to Matteo. “See them out.”

“Yes, Father.”

Matteo escorted them to the gates. Eliza kept her eyes ahead, giving him nothing–not a word, not a glance. She knew Nathaniel was watching, waiting to see if there was anything between them.

Only when they reached the door did Matteo tap his phone with his finger, the gesture small and quick. We’ll talk through this.

Eliza caught the meaning instantly but said nothing. She climbed into the car beside Nolan.

The moment the door shut, Nolan’s expression shifted, his eyes carrying a trace of jealousy. “So the two of you are passing secret signals in front of me now?”

“What secret signals?” Eliza reached over and tugged at his cheek. “If you saw it, how can it be a secret?”

Nolan wasn’t truly angry, only sulking a little. If he had been jealous in earnest, Matteo wouldn’t have left the estate unscathed.

“But it wasn’t a wasted trip,” Eliza said, pulling the card back out. “This clinic feels wrong. Any company Nathaniel has shares in isn’t exactly clean. And if Wendy is sending Naomi there, it means Wendy has leverage inside. Otherwise, they wouldn’t dare handle something this delicate.”

eyes slid toward Nolan. “Tomorrow, we pay them a visit.”

“Alright.”

“Tonight we’ll investigate what they really do there. Then tomorrow, we’ll know what to look for.”

“Alright.”

She eyed him, amused. “You say yes to everything. In that case–why don’t we just get our marriage certificate tomorrow?”

“Alright.”

The word slipped out before he realized what she had said. He froze, blinking.

Eliza smirked. “So you’re just agreeing to anything now? Even that?”

Catching the sparkle of mischief in her eyes, Nolan let out a low laugh. “Not this time. No.”

Her face fell, sharp with mock seriousness. “Why? Don’t you want to marry me?”

“Because you’re not old enough yet.”
