Wendy let out a laugh, as if she had just heard the funniest joke. “I’ve already escaped abroad. Why on earth would I surrender?”

“Because the one targeting you isn’t me,” Nolan said calmly, “it’s Henry.”

At that, Wendy’s brows knit together.

She seemed to take his words seriously, replaying them in her mind.

Until now, she had never considered that the Foster family would move against her. Her older brother had once told her that no matter who became the head of the Foster family, as long as she still carried the Qi name, they would never touch her.

Meanwhile-

Vivian had led Eliza to the elevator.

As Vivian was about to take her upstairs, Eliza glanced at the cameras inside the elevator and said, “I’m not too familiar with your home. It looks really big.”

“Of course. It’s a whole estate–it has to be big.”

“Could I maybe look around a bit?”

“Sure. Our garden is beautiful.”

“Then let’s go see your garden.”

Vivian nodded and led her out.

way, Eliza asked, “So the garden’s on the first floor?”

“Yes, the garden’s outside. I usually go there a lot.”

“I’ve heard that estates like this often have greenhouses for rare plants. Do you have one here?”

“Of course. Mom loves raising Wendigo Corp plants. Some of them can’t survive outdoors, so she built a greenhouse out on the lawn. I’ll take you.”

“She does, but honestly, even though the estate is huge, she mostly stays in her room. Sometimes she’ll visit the greenhouse, and other times she disappears for hours–sometimes even all night.”

“Which means… this place must have something even more interesting.”

Vivian tilted her head. “I don’t think so. But every time, she goes underground. She never lets me follow,”

Eliza’s sharp instincts caught the clue. “Underground? You mean a garage?”

“Of course not. The garage is outside. Most estates have wine cellars underground. But ours has two levels. She never lets anyone into the second basement. I tried sneaking in once, but I triggered an alarm.”

“That’s unusual. Even you can’t go in, and there are alarms?”

“Yes. She scolded me harshly that time. She said no one but her is allowed into the second basement. And it’s fingerprint locked–the elevator only works with her print.”

Vivian demonstrated with the scanner inside the elevator, which was exactly what Eliza had noticed earlier.

Now Eliza understood.

The second basement had to be where Wendy kept whatever she valued most. And the only thing Wendy would guard so fiercely was the laboratory shown in her mother’s old videos.

But… if only Wendy’s fingerprint could unlock it, then how had her mother managed to record footage down there?

Eliza fell silent.

She would have to figure that out for herself.

Hopefully Nolan could keep Wendy occupied a little longer.

She guessed her mother must have had another way in back then. Or maybe security had been weaker, and she had slipped in by chance.

Or perhaps Wendy had moved Morten after that incident, hiding him somewhere safer.

All of it was possible.

Eliza frowned, took Vivian’s hand, and whispered, “I’m sorry.”
