Charles was silent for a few seconds, his gaze sweeping around the room before settling on her easel, where a half–finished painting was propped up.
Alicia lived alone, so she never put her easel away. That saved her the hassle of setting it up after school or packing it away at night–no need to waste time. Sometimes, she’d spot a flaw in the painting while eating and make timely corrections.
Seeing Charles looking at her painting, Alicia cleared her throat and said, “I always lay paper on the floor when I paint, so the paint doesn’t get all over it.”
Charles couldn’t help but feel a bit helpless. He thought she was just way too cautious.
He said, “I know you can paint. Would you mind making something for me?”
“Huh?” Alicia blinked in surprise, a little lost at first–then she got what he meant and nodded quickly. “Of course! Do you want a landscape or a portrait?”
Charles replied, “A portrait.”
“Who do you want me to draw?” Alicia asked, taking a sip of water.
He pointed at himself. “Me.”
Alicia almost coughed up the water she’d just drunk, but managed not to. She quickly put down her glass. “You… want me to draw you?”
“Yeah,” Charles said calmly. “Can you do it?”
Alicia lit up, super excited. ‘Can I do that? Well, of course! A free model, and such a perfect one at that? Someone as insanely handsome as Mr. Yates–most artists could only dream of having him as a live model.‘
She nodded eagerly. “Absolutely! I’d love to!”
Charles curved his lips into a little smile. “Alright. Can we do that today?”
Alicia glanced at her half–finished work and asked, “Are you in a hurry?”
Charles thought to himself, ‘I’m not the one in a rush. She’s the one who needs the cash.‘
He said, “Yeah, it’d be best if you could finish today. I’ve got big plans for it.”
Alicia just couldn’t see why anyone would urgently need a portrait of themselves. She couldn’t help but wonder, ‘It’s not the old days, and if it’s just about speed, snapping a photo would be way easier.
‘But honestly, it isn’t my place to worry about that. The big shot has asked me to paint, so I’ll draw–he’s given me a place to stay and helped me out more than once. It’s not like I’m some world–famous artist, anyway.
‘Plus, with Mr. Yates being ridiculously handsome and offering to model for me–seriously, getting a free

Alicia nodded. “Alright, let’s get started now?”

She glanced up at the clock on the wall. “It’s going to take at least four hours. It’s already past five, so we probably won’t be done until after ten
“Alright, take your time. There’s no hurry.” Charles said with concern. “You haven’t had dinner yet, have you?”
Alicia shook her head. “No, I haven’t, but it’s fine. I can go without it–let’s just get started.”
Charles frowned. “Seriously? What about your stomach? Don’t skip meals for this”
When Alicia heard the mix of concern and scolding in his words, she was caught off guard and paused for a second.
Wow… When was the last time someone actually worried about me like this?‘ she realized, a bittersweet feeling washing over her. Only when I was little, back when Charlie was around… He was the only one who looked out for me with this kind of care.
She stared at Charles, completely stunned.
Charles cleared his throat. “I haven’t had dinner either.”
Alicia nodded quickly. “Oh, then I…”
Suddenly, Alicia froze–what on earth could she even make for Charles? ‘Seriously, am I supposed to whip up microwave pasta again? At least last time I had some meat sauce… Now the fridge is a wasteland.”
“Anything left in the fridge?” Charles asked.
“Nothing at all. Guess we’ll have to order takeout,” Alicia said.
“Alright, I’ll handle it,” Charles said, pulling out his phone and heading out to the rooftop terrace to make the
call.
Alicia watched his back for a moment, let out a quiet sigh, then got up to carefully remove the half–finished painting from her easel and set down a fresh sheet for the new one.
Charles didn’t just call Noble Leaf Bistro to have food delivered–he also gave Kevin a ring, telling him to head home and just leave the car behind.
When Charles came back inside, Alicia had already swapped out the paper on her easel.
“Mr. Yates, where do you want to pose? Sitting or standing? If you don’t mind, I’d suggest sitting or even lying down–it’ll be way more comfortable than standing for hours,” Alicia said.
“I get to lie down?” Charles asked.
Alicia nodded. “Of course.”

Charles nodded. “Then I’ll go with lying down.”
“Alright.” Alicia said, nodding. “Do you want to lie down on the couch?”

Charles nodded and lounged back on the couch, casually getting comfortable. He turned to the side, half- reclining with his head propped up on one hand, looking like he was deep in thought.
Alicia glanced outside–the sky was still bright enough, but it was winter, and it’d be pitch dark before long. If she wanted to finish the sketch tonight, they’d have to rely on lamplight anyway. There was no point waiting, so she might as well flip the lights on now.
She walked over, turned on the lights, and pulled the curtains closed.
Alicia was already lost in her art zone, but Charles was definitely feeling something different. The moment he saw her draw the curtains, his ears heated up, turning a faint shade of red as embarrassment sneaked up on him.
He cleared his throat. “Why are you closing the curtains?”
Alicia explained, “It’s still light out, so we’ve got natural sunlight right now, but it’ll be dark soon, and we’ll have to switch to artificial lighting.
“The two kinds of light are totally different, and if we change the lighting halfway through, it could mess with the whole vibe of the drawing.
“Honestly, drawing and photography are pretty much the same–lighting is super important. I want to make sure your portrait turns out perfect, so I’m just adjusting the lighting a bit.”
