Maria looked like she couldn’t even wrap her head around what Adam was saying. She just stared for a moment before snapping. “Adam, you still sticking up for Alicia after all this? That little bitch is the reason our family’s falling apart! Aaron’s headed for jail. Tiffany’s getting roasted online-everyone wants her gone. How can you not see her true colors by now? She just can’t stand to see us happy, after everything we’ve done for her. The way she’s torn our family apart-she’s nothing but an ungrateful snake.”

Adam let out a cold chuckle. “Mom, Aaron kidnapped Alicia. Jail’s exactly what he’s got coming. And Tiffany? She’s got no real skills, always scheming and going down the wrong path. That’s her own fault.”

Before Adam could even finish, Maria slapped him hard across the face. She was shaking all over as she glared at him, shouting, “They’re your own brother and sister! How can you talk about them like that? You’re taking the side of an outsider over your own family?”

Maria had always been a kind mom-she’d never laid a hand on any of her kids before. This was the first time Adam had ever been hit by her.

He pressed a hand to his cheek, letting out a mocking laugh. “Guess having a mom like you is exactly why Aaron and Tiffany turned out the way they did.”

Suddenly, the study door swung open, and Hugh stepped out, his expression cold and chilling as he fixed his gaze on Adam. “Is that how you speak to your mother?”

Adam stared Hugh down and asked, “Dad, you were in on all of it too, weren’t you?”

Hugh’s eyes flashed with anger. “Adam, the whole family’s a mess and you won’t even help-now you show up just to cause trouble? What, you trying to rebel against your own family or something?”

“Did you know?” Adam stared Hugh down, refusing to back off. He’d come today for one thing-to get an

answer.

He just wanted to see if there was even a single sane person left in this family.

Hugh shot back, “Is that a question you should even be asking? If you don’t want what’s best for this family, then get out-and don’t ever come back.”

Adam let out a mocking laugh. “You know what? You’re all nuts. I’ve had it. I’m never coming back-I refuse to live with a pack of lunatics.”

With that, he turned and walked out.

Regret flashed across Maria’s heart as she watched Adam leave. ‘Maybe I shouldn’t have hit him,’ she thought, a mix of guilt and annoyance swirling inside. ‘But after what he said, I couldn’t help it. Fine, if he wants to go, let him. He’ll come running back once he figures things out.

After Adam left, Hugh stormed back into his study, slamming the door behind him.

Maria couldn’t stand being in this house for another second, so she headed straight to the hospital to see Tiffany.

Tiffany’s eyes were puffy and red from all the crying. The moment she spotted Maria, she collapsed into her mother’s arms, bawling, “Mom, what am I supposed to do? I’m finished!”

Maria couldn’t hold back either-she started crying right along with her.

They clung to each other, sobbing for a while. Finally, Maria gently stroked Tiffany’s hair and whispered, “Tiffany, your dad said he’ll find a way to get you out of the country for a bit. You’ll stay overseas until things blow over, and then we’ll bring you home. It’s just for now, honey-you’ll be safe.”

Tiffany really didn’t want to go abroad. The thought of being trapped in a foreign country filled her with dread.

She clung to Maria, crying, “Mom, I just got back to you after spending so long apart, and now you want to send me away again? I can’t bear to leave you and Dad, and I haven’t even had the chance to repay your kindness yet.”

Maria wiped away her tears, her voice trembling, “Honey, I don’t want to send you away either, but what choice do we have? Your dad says if you don’t go, jail’s the only thing waiting for you.”

Tiffany grit her teeth, her voice shaky. “Mom, there’s a way-no jail, and I won’t have to leave the country. But you’d have to go through something rough for me.”

Maria’s eyes went wide. “What is it? Just say the word-if it keeps you here with me, I’ll endure anything.”

Tiffany murmured, “Mom, everything hinges on Alicia. Just suck it up and beg Alicia.”

“Alicia?” Maria’s face twisted in disgust. “You want me to plead with that ungrateful brat? Not a chance.”

“Mom, don’t you want me to stay here with you?” Tiffany squeezed Maria’s hand, her voice cracking. “Mom, Alicia still cares about you-I remember when I first came back, she just wanted your love so much. If you can just talk to her, if you can get her to drop the charges, then I can stay, and Aaron can come home too.”

Maria gritted her teeth. “Fine. I’ll go beg her.”

After leaving the hospital, Maria had someone look up Alicia’s class schedule and found out when she’d be finished. Once she knew, she asked the driver, Graham, to drive her straight to the entrance of Premier Academy.

She waited in the car for about ten minutes until she spotted Alicia coming out, Maria immediately told Graham, “Go bring her over.”

Graham nodded, got out, and blocked Alicia’s path. “Miss Alicia, Mrs. Lawrence wants to see you. Please get in the car-she’s got something to discuss.”

Alicia shot a glance at the car parked by the curb, a smirk playing on her lips. “Trying to kidnap me again?”

She didn’t bother keeping her voice down, and with lots of students milling around after class, heads instantly turned their way as soon as Alicia spoke.

Graham, clearly embarrassed, waved his hands in a frantic gesture of denial. “No, Miss Alicia, that’s not it. Please, just get in the car-Mrs. Lawrence wants to talk to you.”

Alicia shrugged, her tone flat. “Sorry, I don’t dare get in. Wouldn’t want to end up kidnapped again.”

Graham couldn’t exactly drag her in, so he hurried back to Maria to report.

Maria’s face contorted with rage. “That little witch! How dare she accuse me of kidnapping!”
