Chapter 147

Maria was convinced that a few carefully chosen words, dripping with a concern she did not truly feel, would be enough to soften Alicia’s heart.

“My dear girl,” she cooed, her voice a silken trap of feigned worry, “you must know I only ask because I care.

Afterward, she glanced around and suggested, “It’s kind of crowded standing here, people coming and going. Why don’t we move over to that café?”

She nodded toward the café nearby as she spoke.

Maria wasn’t some street vendor-she was a lady of means. There’d been plenty of drama with the Lawrence family lately, so she needed to keep things discreet.

Alicia nodded. “Alright, let’s go.”

She strode straight toward the café, not sparing Maria a second look.

Maria reached out, hoping Alicia would help her, but Alicia just ignored her and kept walking. Her hand hung awkwardly in the air, and she clenched her jaw with frustration. ‘Just wait until the Lawrence family smooths over this legal trouble-I’m going to make that bitch pay,’ Maria seethed to herself.

Fuming, Maria stormed after Alicia, then picked a seat in a corner by the window.

Alicia leaned back lazily in her chair, giving Maria a curious glance. “Alright, so what is it you want to talk about?” she asked, clearly not eager for small talk.

Just then, a waiter approached. “Good afternoon, ladies. What can I get for you today?” he asked politely.

Maria picked up the menu, flipped it open with a sharp rustle, and said, “I’ll have a caramel cappuccino- extra foam, and make sure the caramel’s the imported kind, not the syrupy stuff.”

She set the menu down without pushing it to Alicia.

Maria smirked, feeling superior. ‘Let her try to keep up,’ Maria thought. ‘She might have lived in the house, but she never learned the difference between mere consumption and true discernment.

She brushed me off earlier? Let’s see her squirm when she realizes I’m still the one calling the shots here,’ Maria gloated inwardly, a vindictive glint in her eyes.

She deliberately stayed quiet, waiting for Alicia to hesitate.

Alicia didn’t so much as glance at the menu. “A glass of sparkling water with lemon, thank you,” she said, her tone utterly unfazed.

Maria couldn’t hide a smug smirk. “Oh, darling, are you sure? One can get that anywhere,” she said, her voice laced with sarcastic pity. “Let me order you a proper drink. Their single-origin pour-over is quite respectable.”

“No need,” Alicia replied coolly, finally meeting Maria’s gaze. “I find overly sweetened coffee a little… juvenile.

And it’s late for caffeine.”

She then handed the menu directly back to the waiter, her movements decisive.

“And I’ll also have the pistachio tiramisu.”

“An excellent choice, ma’am,” the waiter replied, a genuine smile touching his lips. It was a sophisticated, modern dessert-the most expensive on the menu and a clear sign of a patron with a developed palate. He was impressed.

The waiter left, and Maria gave an annoyed huff. Her attempt to paint Alicia as unsophisticated had backfired, and Alicia’s calm dismissal of her cappuccino as “juvenile” stung.

They sat in a thick, hostile silence until their orders arrived.

Alicia didn’t make any move to share with Maria—she just grabbed her spoon and started digging into her dessert.

Maria had a notorious sweet tooth, and everyone in the family knew it. Every time there were desserts at home, Hugh and the kids would let her have the first bite. Now, seeing the beautiful tiramisu sitting before Alicia, Maria instinctively reached for her spoon, about to take some.

But before she could even get close, Alicia simply lifted the tiramisu and took big, unrestrained bites, not caring about manners at all.

Maria’s hand paused, a flash of frustration crossing her face. With a huff, she gave up and let the spoon clatter onto the table, feeling her anger burning in her chest.

Alicia pretended not to notice Maria’s obvious irritation and just kept munching her cake. “Mrs. Lawrence, what exactly are you here for? If you’ve got something to say, spit it out. Otherwise, once I finish this dessert, I’m out of here,” she said.

Maria tightened her fists, forcing herself to stay calm before snapping, “Alicia, Tiffany is your sister, no matter what. Siblings fight, but you went to the police? That’s too much. Be sensible and drop the charges against Tiffany and Aaron. We’re family, after all-there’s no need to turn a private matter into a public spectacle.”

Alicia popped the last bite of cake into her mouth and asked, “And what if I don’t?”

Maria’s brows shot up, her voice going shrill in an instant. “How can you refuse? They’re your own sister and brother! Are you seriously going to sit back and watch them end up behind bars?”

Alicia wiped her mouth with a napkin, chuckling dryly. “Mrs. Lawrence, are you trying to threaten me now?”

María took a deep breath to steady herself. “No, I’m only saying, as family, we should stick together…”

Alicia took a slow sip of her sparkling water, glanced at Maria, and said with a smirk, “Go ahead-beg me.”

“What?” Maria gaped at her, totally taken aback. ‘Did she just say I should beg her? How could she, as my adopted daughter, actually say something like that?’ Her head was spinning in disbelief.

Alicia took another sip and let out a soft chuckle, “Man, that’s sour.”

Setting down her glass, she dabbed her lips with a napkin and added, “Honestly, Mrs. Lawrence, weren’t you here today to ask me for a favor?”

“I..” Maria gritted her teeth, shooting Alicia a fierce glare. “I’m your mom-how could you actually ask me to beg you?”

“Suit yourself. I’m outta here,” Alicia said, slinging her bag over her shoulder, ready to leave.

Maria reached out and grabbed her arm.

Alicia looked over at her, eyebrow raised in challenge.

Maria flashed back to what Tiffany had told her-Tiffany had literally said, “Just suck it up and beg Alicia.

But Maria just couldn’t spit those words out, not in front of this brat she’d always looked down on.

“Still not saying it? Well, I’m actually out of here,” Alicia quipped, a lazy smile on her lips as she brushed off Maria’s grip.

Maria saw a few people glancing their way, and the last thing she wanted was to get embarrassed in public. Lowering her voice, she hissed, “Just sit down.”

Alicia sat back down, watching Maria with relaxed amusement, clearly enjoying seeing her on the verge of blowing up.

Maria bit back her anger, her tone strained. “Fine, as your mother, I’m begging you-just let Aaron and Tiffany off already, okay?”

“Not sincere enough,” Alicia replied coolly, unfazed.

Maria gritted her teeth, snapping, “What, are you expecting me to kneel down and beg you?”
