Alicia was completely confused. She’d just come to help Gloria tune her harp, and now that it was done, staying around any longer would just be weird.
She said, keeping her tone cool, “Mrs. Clifford’s harp is tuned. I’ve got things to do.”
She grabbed her bag and turned to leave, but Elliot suddenly stepped in front of her, looking a little hurt. “So, you really can’t stand being with me?”
Alicia froze. She felt like her brain was about to crash. ‘What’s up with that look and tone? He’s acting like I’m some kind of player or something, but we barely even know each other, right?‘ she thought.
Alicia was totally baffled. “Dude, are you okay?”
Elliot clenched his fists, annoyed. “So you think messing with me like this makes you special?”
Alicia stared at him in disbelief. “Wait, what? I’m messing with you on purpose?”
Elliot snapped impatiently, “You should stop watching so many dramas. All this weird stuff you’re picking up isn’t cute. Honestly, it’s annoying. So just drop it, alright?”
Alicia’s lips twitched. “Elliot, confidence is great, but when it turns into arrogance, it seriously gets annoying.
“I thought I made myself real clear last time–I’m not into you, not trying to catch your eye, and definitely not messing with you on purpose. So seriously, you’re reading way too much into this. I’ve got things to do. I’m
out.”
With that, Alicia walked away, as if she were avoiding a disaster.
Elliot watched her walk away, then sighed, his voice softer. “Alright, alright. I don’t want to fight with you anymore, Alicia. I was wrong, okay? I totally misread you, and I had no clue Tiffany was that kind of person. Can you forgive me?”
Alicia turned around, looking just as frustrated. “Elliot, honestly, there’s nothing going on between us, and we’re not even friends. It’s not like you ever did anything to me, so honestly, there’s nothing for me to forgive. Bye.
“Hold up, Elliot called out again.
Alicia took a deep breath. ‘Does this guy ever know when to quit?‘ she thought.
Just as she was about to snap at him, Elliot suddenly pulled out a blue velvet box and handed it to her. “Here, it’s for you.”
Alicia was so completely caught off guard that she was momentarily speechless.
Seeing her reaction, Elliot smirked. He had known all along that no woman could resist a gift–Alicia was no exception. He had put a lot of effort into getting this gift, and he was sure she’d like it.

Elliot just smiled. “Come on, open it, see what’s inside.”
But Alicia didn’t take the box. “I was just helping Mrs. Clifford tune her harp. I don’t need any reward.”
Elliot’s smile faded, and his face turned dark. “This isn’t a reward for the tuning. It’s a gift for you.”
“Well, I didn’t earn it, so I really shouldn’t accept it,” Alicia remained calm.
“Why do you have to make things so complicated? You tried to get my attention, and now I’m giving it to you, trying to get along, even picked out a gift for you, and you still refuse?
“Alicia, there’s a limit to playing hard to get. A little bit is fine, but you’re taking it too far and it’s honestly getting annoying,” Elliot said, clearly frustrated.
Alicia was so pissed. “Elliot, are you for real? You think I’m trying to get your attention? Take a good look at yourself—you’re nothing but a cringy tryhard, acting like you’re the main character in some dumb drama. What a dumbass.”
She turned to leave, but Elliot blocked her path again. “If you don’t want my attention, then why are you friendly with everyone else, but cold with me?”
“Obviously ‘cause you’ve got something loose upstairs. You keep daydreaming as if you’re the hotshot male lead of some campus romance. I don’t hang out with people who are straight–up delusional,” Alicia fired back, rolling her eyes.
She quickly slipped past him and out the door.
Elliot stood behind her, teeth clenched. “Alicia, why can’t you be adorable like Tiffany? With an attitude like yours, no one’s going to like you.”
Alicia frowned. ‘Ugh, this guy is just as crazy as Tiffany. No way, I seriously need to avoid him from now on,’ she thought.

After another day of classes, the weekend finally rolled around.
It was the day Alicia and a couple of her friends, including Chloe, had planned to hit up the art gallery.
With breakfast finished, Alicia carefully wrapped the painting she’d displayed at the Crown Hotel in cloth, ready to head out.
Since the painting was too large to take on the subway, she flagged down a taxi and went straight to the gallery.
By the time she arrived, it was just around nine in the morning, and the gallery hadn’t opened yet. She glanced up at the sign over the entrance, the big gold letters spelling out, “Art Tells Life.”
Alicia looked at the name and smiled. She had to admit, the three girls had some great ideas. It was a great
name.
