Charles had moved countless times with his mom growing up. More often than not, he was surrounded by the sound of his parents fighting. He’d never seen snowfall like this before. Only Alicia could make him feel this peaceful.

Suddenly, he just didn’t want to go. He wished he could stay by Alicia’s side like this forever, wishing that time would freeze at this very moment.

Alicia finished her last bite of sandwich, wiped her hands, and stood up. Mr. Yates, do you want to change into something else first? Should we get back to painting?

Charles finished his sandwich too, cleared the plates, and said, Let’s do it this afternoon.”

Okay,Alicia replied, quickly taking the plates from him. I’ll wash them.” Since he made breakfast, the fair thing was for her to handle the cleanup.

Charles didn’t argue. He handed her the plates and headed to the bedroom to get his clothes.

When Alicia finished tidying up the kitchen and came out, Charles had already changed. Instead of his usual suit, he was wearing a cozy down jacket. How about we go downstairs and build a snowman?Charles asked.

Alicia’s eyes sparkled. Yes!she answered brightly.

Let’s go,Charles said with a smile, making his way to the elevator.

Alicia quickly grabbed her coat and was about to follow, but then remembered she hadn’t washed her clothes from last night. She dashed over to the sunroom on the east side of the courtyard.

When she walked in, she saw her clothes already hanging up to dry.

Charles noticed she hadn’t come back, so he followed her. When he saw her standing there, he said, I had some clothes to wash too, so I just threw mine in with yours.”

Alicia felt a strange flutter in her chest. Our clothes are washed together. If we wear them, would it be like we’re wrapped up in each other’s arms?she wondered.

You don’t mind, do you?Charles asked when she didn’t reply.

Alicia quickly shook her head, trying to push the strange thoughts away. No, I really don’t mind.”

Alright then. Let’s go downstairs and play in the snow,Charles said with a faint smile.

Alicia nodded, and Charles led the way. She followed him.

Downstairs, the compound was almost empty. The few people outside were probably housekeepers off to shop. The snow was still falling, but it wasn’t nearly as heavy as last night.

Alicia crouched down and scooped up a handful of snow. She remembered when she was little, if she was thirsty and didn’t want to go inside for a drink, she’d just eat some snow instead.

But now, she really valued her healthher stomach wasn’t great, so she didn’t dare eat any. She just brought the snow to her lips without actually taking a bite.

Charles watched her with a smile and then went to the security office to borrow some tools. By the time he came back with the tools, Alicia had already rolled a huge snowball with just her hands.

Noticing her hands were red from the cold, he was about to reach out to take them, like he used to do when they were kids, tucking her hands inside his jacket to warm them up. But halfway through, he stopped.

They were too old for that now, and she didn’t feel close enough to him anyway. Above all, it would ruin her reputation out here in public.

Charles said, Wipe your hands and warm them up. We’ll use the tools to build the snowman in a bit.”

Alicia blew into her hands to warm them, smiling brightly.

Charles was gearing up to shovel the snow when Alicia suddenly bent down, grabbed a handful of snow, and quickly made a snowball. She threw it at him.

Charles blinked in surprise, then grinned, grabbed some snow, and threw it right back at her. They ended up having a fullon snowball fight.

Just as they were getting into it, a few kids from the neighborhood came over and joined in, making it even more fun.

It was the weekend, so the kids didn’t have school. Seeing Charles and Alicia having so much fun downstairs, they couldn’t resist joining in.

Snowballs flew everywhere, and soon everyone was covered in snow. The falling snow was already dusting their hair and shoulders.

Charles looked at the snow in Alicia’s hair and felt an unexpected closeness between them.

Alicia turned to look at him, her eyebrows and lashes covered in snow, her nose red from the cold. She gave him a mischievous smile.

That smile almost blinded him. He stood there, frozen, when a snowball suddenly hit him right in the face.

Alicia jumped in surprise, then hurried over. Sorry, Mr. Yates. I thought you’d dodge it.”

Charles gave a small laugh. It’s fine. After a pause, he asked, So, are we still building that snowman?

Alicia nodded.

I’ll do the shoveling,” Charles said with a grin.

Together, they started building the snowman, working perfectly in sync. When the kids saw them building the snowman, they rushed over to help.

It was amazing how quickly the snowman came together with so many people working together.

The kids grabbed Alicia and Charles’s hands, pulling them into a circle around the snowman, laughing as they spun around.

They sang a song and stepped in a dance pattern Charles didn’t recognize. They said they were trying to stamp a specific shape into the snow, probably something from a popular cartoon these days.
