They had already studied the grounds carefully during the day, and since they had been here once before, the layout was familiar enough.
Together they moved quietly toward the elevator.
Because Cramer had arrived, most of the servants and even the butler were busy entertaining him. The entrance was strangely unguarded.
With Wendy’s fingerprint still in hand, Eliza easily unlocked the elevator. But she didn’t

After what had happened earlier, Wendy would surely have increased security around the second basement. Forcing their way down now would be nearly impossible.
So Eliza had another plan.
She and Nolan stayed hidden in a shadowed corner near the elevator, waiting.
A moment later, the doors slid open.
Wendy’s bodyguard came up and bent to whisper in her ear.
Wendy’s eyes narrowed, her gaze turning icy.
She had suspected as much.
She had left people watching the surveillance room all day. And five minutes ago, the system suddenly went down.
So many mishaps in a single day were no coincidence.
It had to be Eliza and Nolan.
Everything they’d done today–their act with Vivian, the staged commotion–was just a cover to get close enough to steal Morten’s clone.
That, Wendy would never allow.
“Move Morten immediately,” she ordered in a low, sharp voice. “Find a safe place. No one touches him. No one.”

Her men moved quickly. To keep suspicion away, they emptied the sleep chamber first, then carefully carried Morten’s clone out in secret. When Eliza and Nolan finally reached the second basement, all they would see was an empty pod.
But Wendy didn’t know that Eliza and Nolan had already anticipated this.
Outside, their people had spread a net around the estate. Every vehicle would be checked the moment it moved.
Inside the mansion, they stayed hidden, waiting to intercept if needed.
Meanwhile-
Upstairs, Cramer checked the time on his watch. Nearly twenty minutes passed before Vivian finally came down.
The moment he saw her, a faint smile touched his lips.
Vivian lowered her head shyly under his gaze, the picture of a girl in love.
To anyone watching, they seemed like any young couple lost in each other.
But Wendy’s thoughts were far away. She wanted nothing more than for Cramer to take Vivian and leave. The sooner he was gone, the sooner she could return to Morten.
“Since Vivian is here, you can take her home now,” Wendy said.
“Why so quick, Mrs. Cullinan? I think we can discuss our cooperation again tonight.”
Cramer sat back on the sofa as though he had no plans of leaving soon.
Wendy’s frown deepened.
This man had never wanted dealings with her before. Now he lingered, talking about business?
It wasn’t Vivian that held him here–it was something else.
“Tonight I have other matters. We’ll discuss cooperation another time.”
