“What exactly do you know?”

“I know that for more than twenty years, everything you’ve done has been for Morten. Back then, someone gave you cloning technology and helped you create another Morten. By now he should be in his twenties, no different from the original. But what he lacks are Morten’s memories. And the cloning technology of that time was crude–the body of the clone fragile. To overcome that flaw, you’ve been working tirelessly to develop memory implantation and a regenerative serum to repair his cells. At the same time, you created all those anti–aging drugs so that when this clone opened his eyes, he would see you as you once were–young, beautiful. Am I wrong?”
Cramer had investigated Wendy for years. He knew her better than anyone else.
Wendy looked at the smile on his face and, for the first time, realized she had underestimated him.
She had always dismissed him as a wolf cub, dangerous but easy to read. But now… she couldn’t see through him at all.
“What you’re saying is nothing but imagination. I’ve never admitted to any of it.”
“I don’t need your admission. Do you know why I’m wasting my time here tonight?”
Vivian sat nearby, confused. She didn’t know who Morten was, what cloning meant, or what her mother had been doing all these years.
Cell regeneration? Anti–aging drugs? It was all a blur.
She stared at Wendy, shaken. “What is this? What’s going on?”
Wendy’s face hardened. “This has nothing to do with you. Get out, now.”
The sharpness in her gaze made Vivian flinch.
Cramer hadn’t intended to let Vivian know the truth either. His words had been a test, to see whether she was aware of Wendy’s secret.
And just as he expected–she knew nothing.
“You and Nolan. And Eliza. What have you conspired to do?”
Wendy’s voice trembled, betraying her fear that her darkest suspicion might be true.
“Madam,” Cramer said smoothly, “if your conscience is clear, why should you be afraid of

By now his meaning was plain.
Vivian was just the excuse. He hadn’t come here out of love–he had come to distract her, to buy Eliza and Nolan time to seize Morten’s clone.
Realizing this, Wendy’s composure shattered. She shoved past Cramer, running outside to where her guards were stationed.
“Quickly!” she shouted. “Chase them! Don’t let the captain’s men lose the package!”
The guards obeyed instantly, but the moment they rushed out they were stopped. Nolan’s men had been waiting.
Nolan’s resources abroad were limited, but tonight Cramer had brought his own forces. Together, they surrounded the entire estate.
“Mrs. Cullinan,” Cramer said with a thin smile, “I’m sorry. But tonight, none of your people are getting out of here.”
It was the first time he had ever seen Wendy like this–her mask cracking, her calm gone, panic plain in her eyes.
If it were any other matter, she could have dismissed it with cold indifference. But not this.
Not Morten.
